5th Element – ‘2.0’
Ballymun-based hiphop duo 5th Element, set around the lyrical talents of Ger Kellett and Ryan ‘Linco’ Lincoln, have been working together as an act since the summer of 2012, releasing their first album State of Mind LP in January 2013. They’re presently working on a collaborative album with Dublin-based DnB producer DoubleScreen. Their recent singles 2.0 (watch the video above) and Faces are just a taste of what to expect from the project.
Ger and Linco grew up separately in Ballymun but it was only a matter of time before their paths would cross. “On occasion, through the years, we’d pass each other the odd time, it’s a small enough area”, says Ger. “We also went to the same secondary school, but it wasn’t until, like, our last year that we began bumping heads about the music thing. We were asked to do the school talent show, one of the teachers heard we wrote our own lyrics and stuff. This turned out to be our first performance together”.
On describing their work ethic and MO in composing tracks, the pair are quite pragmatic: “What usually happens for tracks on this new project is our producer, DoubleScreen, creates an instrumental and then passes it through to us to listen to. He’ll describe to us the emotion and creative thought process he went through to lay down the instrumental. This, in turn, sparks something in either of us … and the track kicks on from there. It’s a complicated process, putting a track together. But, once finished, it’s such an accomplishment.”

There’s been a noticeable power-surge in the Dublin hiphop scene of late and Ger and Linco appreciate the impact certain local acts have had on their own musical journey: “Early on, back around 2012, Costello, G.I and Lethal Dialect were huge influences on us and we owe the lads a huge thanks for showing us the ropes and helping us while we were starting out. There’s so many artist involved in the hiphop scene here. You have Rebel Phoenix, Flynn Johnson, God Creative (see recent Murmur feature here), Ollie Bell, This Side Up … and that’s just to name a small few”.
